- Scotts Bluff is named after an imposing sandstone cliff around Mitchell Pass that was the first obstacle (as far as mountains and elevation is concerned) for emigrants travelling west on the old Oregon Trail, after spending several weeks and travelling for many miles on the grasslands located to the East of this point.
